آموزش الکترونيکي، همچنان که از نامش برمي‌آيد: شامل همه آموزش‌هايي است که با استفاده از ابزارهاي الکترونيکي اعم از صوتي، تصويري، رايانه‌اي، شبکه‌اي و غيره انجام مي‌شود.[چطور سرورهای اینترنت کار می‌کنند؟]
آموزش الکترونيکي پديده‌اي جديد و نو در دنياي امروز است که هنوز در بسياري از نقاط جهان ناشناخته است يا شناخت اندک و مبهمي از آن وجود دارد در صورتي که آموزش غيرحضوري يا آموزش از راه دور، سالهاست که به لحاظ تحولات و تغييرات ساختار اجتماعي و فرهنگي جهان معاصر در عرصه آموزش و يادگيري وارد و نهادينه شده است. در حقيقت آموزش الکترونيکي يکي از شيوه‌هاي آموزش از راه دور است.
